But how do you close this account? Can you do it yourself, or do you necessarily have to get in touch with the customer support staff? What happens with your account once it gets closed? Read our guide on how to close a Green Dot account and learn how to easily get the job done.

What Is Green Dot?

Green Dot took roots in 1999, created by Steven Streit to be used as an online shopping card. The card itself is a prepaid debit card, and you may refill the balance each time you need it. With that in mind, people would use it as a credit card for any payments that they had to make – with just a few differences to the regular U.S. banking system.

Originally, Green Dot was a private company – and it stayed like that for several years. Eventually, the company changed from private to public in 2010, as they grew more and more. They purchased brands such as UniRush Financial Services, Santa Barbara Tax Products Group, Loopt, and AchieveCard.

With its headquarters in California, Green Dot became known as the largest market cap in the world that offered prepaid credit cards. They would make the payments for Intuit, Uber, and Apple Pay Cash, and the corporation would only grow more with time. It even launched its own digital bank.

As a result, over time, the company co-branded with a number of other businesses, including AT&T, Walmart, Citibank, and many others. They collaborated with multiple high-ranking programs and big names. Now, it offers its users a savings account, 3% cashback, as well as interest for those who opt for an Unlimited Cashback type of account.

Bear in mind that the Green Dot card is not what we’d call a “line of credit.” Instead, it makes deductions from potential purchases from the store. Users can add money to the card by means of a paycheck or from the point of sale of a certain store.

How to Close a Green Dot Account

If you want to permanently close or delete your account, start by clearing all the payments that you may have. Here are the steps that you’ll need to follow after that:

  • Go to your email account and hit “Compose Message”
  • Write in the subject area “Request to Delete My Account”
  • Address your email to customersupport@greendot.com
  • Create the body of your email, where you state the reason why you wish to close your account.
  • Mention them to erase your contact information, if it’s possible for them to do so.
  • Hit “Send Email.”

Once someone from the customer support staff reads your email, they will close your account. You may also make the request by traditional mail, at California 91117, or P.O. Box 5100, Pasadena.

Keep in mind that while a canceled account may be reactivated, there is a chance that a deleted account may not be. Consider whether you want to use the Green Dot card again in the future or not.

How to Cancel a Green Dot Card

To cancel a Clean Dot card, you’ll first need to clear out all of your payments. Remember that if you close your account, it may affect your credit. This simple action may lower your credit more than you’d expect. Fees with Green Dot platinum cards may be lower, but you still need to check.

To avoid any potential issues, you must cancel any bills that you may have linked to the account, such as subscriptions or utility bills. Move them onto another active card that you are using. Once that happens, go to the portal under “Close Card” on Green Dot and cancel your card.

To put it simply, here are the steps that you’ll have to follow:

  • Clear any previous payments you may have
  • Go to the Green Dot web page
  • Hit the button under “Close Card

If you want to cancel your account because of security reasons, then Green Dot will not pursue your request. That being said, you’ll need to pay an extra fee for a new card, which may be linked to your Samsung Pay or Apple Pay account.

If you have any questions about the process, call 866-795-7597. They may guide you through the process or, if you cannot handle things yourself, they may cancel your account themselves.

How to Reactivate a Green Dot Card

Depending on the circumstances, you may also reactivate your Green Dot Card. This can be done when the account has only been closed, not entirely deleted. Here are the steps that you need to take:

  • Take out your card sticker and look for the toll-free number to contact the company. Get in touch with customer service by using that number.
  • Once you get in contact with them, add the number on the credit card.
  • For security reasons, you’ll be asked a number of questions. Answer them in order to reactivate your account.

Once you are done with these steps, if the process was done properly, you should receive an email of confirmation. Bear in mind that this will only occur if your email has not been permanently deleted, including data. Also, remember that if the fees get to $0, then Green Dot will automatically delete your account.

Green Dot Account Cancellation FAQs

Cancelling your Green Dot account may come with a couple of questions. Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Access “Security,” and there, you’ll see a point that says “Close Card.” Click on that, and the card should close immediately.

Can We Reopen a Closed Green Dot Account?

Technically speaking, you can. However, if the fee of your account gets to $0, then your account will be deleted without prior notice.
